A Candid Guide for Aspiring Models & Influencers

What You Must Know Before Entering the Fashion Industry

In 2008, the modeling and acting industry in Kolkata was smaller, more intimate, and run by a handful of respected photographers, casting coordinators, and agents. Fast-forward to today, and the landscape has exploded — almost everyone with a smartphone claims to be a photographer or influencer. Unfortunately, along with this boom came something darker: shortcuts, scams, manipulation, and emotional burnout.

This article isn’t a rant. It’s a reflection. A guide. A protective letter to the girls and boys walking into the fashion and glamour world today — full of dreams, confidence, and vulnerability. Based on sixteen years in the modeling, event anchoring, and acting industry — including shows for brands like Tanishq, Kalyan, Malabar, Senco Gold & Diamonds, and work alongside Ayushmann Khurrana — these words are meant to prepare you. Not scare you.

The Illusion of Overnight Fame

One of the biggest mistakes newcomers make today is chasing fame instead of building a foundation. Social media sells the dream of instant popularity — but what it doesn't show are the people who disappear after burning out or being misled. Too many young girls fall prey to manipulation — agreeing to inappropriate requests, sharing personal videos, or doing things their heart never approved of. All because someone said, “This will make you famous.”

Let’s be clear: if your path includes exploitation, it’s not a path. It’s a trap.

The Industry Is Not Fake, But 95% of People Are Pretending

Indian fashion model surrounded by masked industry figures in studio, symbolizing the illusion and reality of the modeling profession.

Today, many self-proclaimed “coordinators,” “directors,” or “photographers” don’t have the credentials or ethics. The worst part? They prey on your desperation. They promise you a break. A film. A show. A photo shoot that’ll “change your life.” In reality, many of them are looking to exploit, not elevate.

So how do you protect yourself?

Start with Integrity: Build a Real Portfolio

Your first step in this career should always be a professional portfolio. Not selfies. Not photos from your friend’s iPhone. Invest in a shoot with a photographer who understands lighting, posing, and storytelling — someone who has worked with real brands or real models. Ask for references. Speak to their past clients. A good photographer won’t just take your picture; they’ll guide you toward your path.

If you start with shortcuts, you will spend your whole life repairing what those shortcuts broke.

Study the Craft: Modeling Is More Than Posing

Indian model practicing in a creative studio with books, mirrors, and runway videos, highlighting modeling as a craft beyond posing.

If you truly want to survive and thrive in this industry, you need to do more than look good in photos. You should know how to:

  • Speak confidently at events (anchoring skills)
  • Dance with emotion and discipline
  • Express different moods (acting fundamentals)
  • Understand body posture and fashion styling
  • Respect deadlines and manage your calendar
  • Build professional relationships without compromise

Being a model or influencer today is not just about beauty — it’s about becoming a complete package. Think of it as a business. You are the brand.

Keep a Parallel Life: Passion Is Not an Excuse to Be Penniless

Indian woman balancing modeling passion with studies and career from her home studio, showing life beyond the spotlight.

One of the biggest mistakes models and actors make is putting all their hope in one basket. Yes, passion is beautiful. But passion without stability becomes pain.

Do something alongside your creative career:

  • Finish your education.
  • Appear in interviews.
  • Try side businesses.
  • Learn digital skills (photography, editing, branding).

Always keep yourself busy. A busy mind has less space for depression, anxiety, or comparison.

And if you do feel low, here’s what helped me:

  • Write — pen down your thoughts, even if they’re messy.
  • Dance — not to perform, but to release emotion.
  • Sing — record your voice and listen back.
  • Meditate — 20 minutes in the morning and evening.
  • Exercise — even 30 minutes of yoga changes your mood.
  • Eat right — avoid junk, hydrate well, and treat your body with love.
  • Sleep 6–8 hours — rest is strength.

This profession demands a strong body, stronger mind, and the strongest heart.

Social Media: Powerful, But Not Everything

In this digital age, having a presence online is important. But don’t confuse Instagram likes with career progress. Don’t get lost in the trap of exposure without value. Focus on building genuine relationships with real artists, designers, directors, and mentors. One meaningful connection is worth more than 10,000 likes.

Never forget: a good reputation travels quietly, but reaches the right ears.

Know When to Say No

Indian fashion model walking away from a casting setup, symbolizing courage to say no and uphold professional boundaries.

If something feels wrong, don’t do it.

Even if someone promises you a big opportunity.

Even if they say, “You’ll regret missing this chance.”

Even if everyone around you says “just adjust.”

If your heart says no — walk away. You’ll save your dignity, your peace, and your career.

Explore Without Fear

Indian woman at a creative crossroads choosing her artistic path with confidence, representing fearless exploration in fashion and beyond.

  • Never stop learning.
  • Never stop meeting people.
  • Never stop working on yourself.

Modeling and acting should be something you love — not something you force yourself to do. Work only when your soul agrees. Do it with a big smile. If your heart’s not in it, it will show. And that kind of work never lasts.

A Note to the Dreamers

Anwesha and fellow aspiring artists during a Mumbai ad campaign, smiling and celebrating creative friendship and dreams.

The glamour industry is not all glitter — but it’s also not all garbage. It’s a mix. And if you walk wisely, stay grounded, and protect your worth, you’ll find your space in it.

I’ve done hoardings, fashion shows, films like Tapoori (Odia, 2016), lived in Mumbai for years, anchored countless events — and every step taught me that talent is important, but self-respect is everything.

You don’t have to be the loudest. Just be the most honest.

And remember: society is not everything, but society is still watching. So build a career that makes you proud — not just famous.

❝ I’ve learned the hard way — your light doesn’t need to scream. It just needs to keep glowing, even when no one’s clapping. Trust yourself, even in silence.❞ — Anwesha

If you’re reading this and feel seen, that means this article was meant for you. Whether you're just starting out or already in the middle of your journey, take a deep breath. There’s still time to build something real.
